Day Hike: Winsor Ridge Trail to Stewart Lake ~ Pecos Wilderness ~ Cowles, New Mexico USA

Friday, August 18, 2017

On Marty’s suggestion, we drove up to Cowles, New Mexico for a hike up to Stewart Lake in the Pecos Wilderness.  This was a hike of two extremes: The extreme beauty of the Winsor Ridge Trail going up… and the extreme mess along the Winsor Creek Trail coming down. Fortunately, the first extreme far outweighed the second extreme!! 🙂 Read more…

Day Hike: Canyon Estates Trailhead to Embudito Trailhead ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico USA

Thursday, August 10, 2017

Okay, let me just come out and say it: This was a tough hike. It was long. It was hot. It was dry. There was a lot of climbing. We are old. Oh, and we ran out of water about 1/2 mile from the finish line. Other than that… what a great hike!!! 🙂

Day Hike: Winsor Trail to Raven’s Ridge and Deception Peak ~ Santa Fe National Forest ~ Santa Fe, New Mexico USA

Friday, June 16, 2017

Given the elevation of Deception Peak (12,343 feet), we were a little concerned that, in mid-June, we would run into snow and ice as we approached the higher elevations. Just to be safe, we packed our micro-spikes.  We did encounter some remaining snow above 11,000 feet, but it was minimal. So we didn’t need our spikes, and the snow just added to the beauty of the area.

Day Hike: 10K / Ellis / South Crest Loop (Part 2) ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 9, 2017

After being forced to bail out of this hike a week ago, due to storm clouds and thunder, we came back out to the 10K Trailhead today to finish our loop hike. The day’s weather was in complete cooperation with our hiking plans, but signage and lack of signage would present some unexpected challenges! 🙂 Read more…

Day Hike: 10K / Ellis / South Crest Loop (Part 1) ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 2, 2017

Our plan was to hike this 11.1 mile loop in one day. Unfortunately, due to building storm clouds and thunder at the crest, for safety reasons, we cut the hike short at the Ellis Trailhead and took the Challenge Trail back down to the 10K Trailhead. It turned out to be a good move on our part because about two hours later, the rain was coming down pretty good. We came back the following Friday and finished the loop. Read more…

Day Hike: Six Trails Loop ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, May 26, 2017

Actually, there really isn’t a hike called Six Trails Loop in the Sandias, but I had to call it something. And since this is a loop hike that encompasses six different trails, Six Trails Loop sounded appropriate!  Read more…

Day Hike: Embudo Trailhead to 3 Gun Spring Trail to Oso Pass to Embudito Trailhead ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 10, 2016

Hiked all, or part, of three trails today. Started the hike from one trailhead. Finished the hike at another trailhead. Yes… that means this hike requires a shuttle! 🙂 Got an earlier start for this hike because we had to drop one vehicle off at the Embudito Trailhead. Then drove the second vehicle a few miles south to the Embudo Trailhead. Our plan was to hike the Embudo Trail up to Post Pass, where the Embudo Trail ends, then hike the 3 Gun Spring Trail up to Oso Pass, then hike the Embudito Trail down to its trailhead.

Day Hike: Pino Trail ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 3, 2016

Haven’t hike the Pino Trail in a few years, so decided it was time to hike it again… this time to shoot some video. The trail was just as I remembered it — long, with great views, and  a lot of climbing! 🙂 If you want to see some still pics of the Pino Trail from the hike I did a few years ago, search this blog for “Pino Trail”.

Day Hike: South Piedra Lisa Trail ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, May 13, 2016
Friday, May 27, 2016

Hiked the South Piedra Lisa Trail — twice — so the video will be a compilation of those two hikes. Since doing this hike, I read that the new, lower section of the trail was completed in March, 2016. So a big thanks to all the volunteers who worked to make this happen. The new section is much more enjoyable than hiking up the gravel road. However, on the first hike, we completely missed the signs showing where the new section is located and just walked up the gravel road like we had done some years back. On the second hike, we finally got it right!
