Day Hike: Pino Trail ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 3, 2016

Haven’t hike the Pino Trail in a few years, so decided it was time to hike it again… this time to shoot some video. The trail was just as I remembered it — long, with great views, and  a lot of climbing! 🙂 If you want to see some still pics of the Pino Trail from the hike I did a few years ago, search this blog for “Pino Trail”.

Day Hike: Blue Dot / Red Dot Trails ~ White Rock Canyon ~ White Rock, New Mexico, USA

Tuesday, April 21, 2015

Another group hike today, this time we drove up to White Rock Canyon and hiked the Blue Dot and Red Dot trails. On a number of past hikes, I have used spectacular to describe the views on those hikes. I find myself needing to use spectacular again to describe the views on this hike. The Rio Grande River has carved out a seriously magnificent canyon and given us some spectacular panoramas. Standing on the rim of the canyon gazing down at the Rio Grande River, I felt the same awe I felt the first time I looked into the Grand Canyon. If you haven’t done this hike, put it on your To Do list because you won’t be disappointed. This hike is definitely a keeper! 🙂

Day Hike: Tunnel Spring ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Placitas, New Mexico, USA

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

Small group hike today with members of the ASCHG to do the Tunnel Spring Hike up near Placitas. This hike starts at the northern entrance to the Crest Trail (#130). There is a spring called Tunnel Spring and, according to the map, not too far from the trail head. Towards the end of the hike, we did pass some seepage which might have originated from a spring, but whether that spring was THE spring, and whether it has tunnel-like characteristics, is anybody’s guess.

Day Hike: Pine Shadow ~ Manzano Mountains ~ Belen, New Mexico, USA

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Went on a group hike today, all the way down to the southern end of the Manzano Mountains to hike the Pine Shadow Trail (#170A), and it took almost two hours just to get to the trail head! The Pine Shadow Trail Head is the southern entry/exit point of the Manzano Mountains and leads up towards Manzano Peak and the Crest Trail (#170), although we did not venture that far today. Hey… we’re seniors!! 😉

Day Hike: Stable Mesa to Kiva Ruins ~ Jemez Mountains ~ New Mexico, USA

June 13, 2013

Today’s ASCHG group hike was supposed to go up Windsor Trail in the Pecos Wilderness; however, due to high fire danger, the National Forest Service closed the Pecos Wilderness a week ago. Rather than cancel the hike altogether, the hike leader decided we would change course and hike up to Stable Mesa and visit the ruins.

Exploratory Hike: Cebolla Canyon ~ Jemez Mountains ~ New Mexico, USA

May 31, 2013

The ASCHG does an Oat/Hay Canyons Loop Hike in the Jemez Mountains at least once or twice during the season. The track for that hike leads up Oat Canyon and down Hay Canyon. Near the entrance to Hay Canyon, the track moves up along the bluffs, above and north of the entrance to Hay Canyon, and there is a rather steep descent from those bluffs in order to get down to the Cebolla Rio. An exploratory hike was setup by some of the ASCHG hike coordinators to scout the area for a safer passage and I was invited to tag along. Since I had never hiked that area before, I was all in. 🙂
