Day Hike: 10K / Ellis / South Crest Loop (Part 2) ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 9, 2017

After being forced to bail out of this hike a week ago, due to storm clouds and thunder, we came back out to the 10K Trailhead today to finish our loop hike. The day’s weather was in complete cooperation with our hiking plans, but signage and lack of signage would present some unexpected challenges! 🙂 Read more…

Day Hike: Embudo Trailhead to 3 Gun Spring Trail to Oso Pass to Embudito Trailhead ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Friday, June 10, 2016

Hiked all, or part, of three trails today. Started the hike from one trailhead. Finished the hike at another trailhead. Yes… that means this hike requires a shuttle! 🙂 Got an earlier start for this hike because we had to drop one vehicle off at the Embudito Trailhead. Then drove the second vehicle a few miles south to the Embudo Trailhead. Our plan was to hike the Embudo Trail up to Post Pass, where the Embudo Trail ends, then hike the 3 Gun Spring Trail up to Oso Pass, then hike the Embudito Trail down to its trailhead.

Day Hike: Domingo Baca Trail to TWA Canyon ~ Sandia Mountains ~ Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

Sunday,  March 22, 2015

For those who don’t know, in February, 1955, TWA Flight 260 took off from the Albuquerque airport in a snowstorm. Within minutes, it crashed into the mountain killing all 16 souls on board. Some debris from that crash remains in the mountain to this day. The canyon where the crash site is located is now referred to as TWA Canyon. There is a trail that leads to the crash site which I have known about since moving here. Today felt like a good day to do this hike.

Making Plans for My First Backpacking Trip

A friend and I are planning a trip into the back country, northeast of Cuba, New Mexico, USA, in the San Pedro Wilderness. This is just north of the area where I went snowshoeing last December. Mid-June looks like a good time for this trip. Snow should be melted, with mild days and cool nights. This area is beautiful and there are a number of small rivers where we will be hiking and camping.

Suunto M3 Compass

How easy is it to get lost or turned around in the wilderness? Very easy!! This point was driven home last September when I went on one of my first hikes. Actually, it wasn’t even a hike. My friend and I just wanted to walk a little way up the Windsor Trail in the mountains outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is a heavily wooded area and after about a ten minute walk, we decide to venture off trail a bit to look around. We didn’t go far at all, but we did go far enough to lose sight of the trail and we didn’t have a topo map, compass, or a GPS with us. We tried to retrace our footsteps to get back to the trail, but couldn’t find it. In this area, I knew we would eventually locate the trail, but when we did, we were about 50 yards down-trail from where we had originally left it! Lesson learned. 🙂
