Hiked up to Cerro Grande overlooking the Valles Caldera on March 31, 2012. Elevation at the trail head was 9,000 feet (2,743m) and at the peak it was 10,200 feet (3,108m). Devastation from last year’s fire was visible everywhere and almost made you cry, but the hike and views of the caldera were awesome. It was a 2 mile (3.2km) hike to the top and took almost two hours, but only an hour to get back down. There is a herd of 6,000 elk that live in and around the caldera, but did we get to see even one of them? Of course not!! 😉
